She has been the head of the United Kingdom since June 1953, when the 27-year-old princess ascended to the throne and became Queen Elizabeth II.

Over the years Queen Elizabeth has been a fashion icon and in celebration of her 90th birthday, a program of three exhibitions will be staged across the Queen’s official residences during 2016. Fashioning a Reign: 90 Years of Style from The Queen’s Wardrobe will show over 150 of her most iconic looks, from childhood to the present day.

The first exhibition will open at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh from today until 16 October 2016 and will focus on the use of tartan in her dresses. The second and largest exhibition will be at the Summer Opening of the State Rooms, Buckingham Palace, from 23 July to 2 October 2016 and the third will open at Windsor Castle from 17 September 2016 to 8 January 2017. These last two will focus on the royal couture worn at state and private functions.
